“God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy.”
- Billy Currington, country music extraordinaire
Alright, before you jump to conclusions, I am NOT pushing religion or drinking on you, so pump the brakes. My mom uses this quote, and it makes sense to me, someone who does believe in God and who likes beer, but not everyone can relate, so I’m going to break it down for you:
God is Great: What you can take away from this portion of the quote is that one of the most important things in life is to have something you believe in. It doesn’t even have to be a religion; just something that you are passionate about, and hopefully that makes you happy. It can be volunteering, your job, school, family, religion, or just being a good person. It really doesn’t matter at all, just make sure that you have that one thing that you can really hold on to through the good times and the bad-if you can do that, your life will vastly improve. Hence, this portion being ‘great.’
Beer is Good: Social situations are incredibly important if you are to live a healthy life. You don’t need to have hundreds of friends, but 1 or 2 will absolutely enrich your life. Friends are part of what makes you who you are. So, the reason ‘beer is good,’ is because in this context, drinking beer is a social activity and brings people together. I’m not saying you need beer to make friends or be social, but having some kind of activity you and your friends do every weekend like golfing, seeing a movie, etc, will establish strong relationships and give you something to do on weekends.
People are Crazy: This is just an easy assumption to make about every person you meet. But don’t get me wrong, crazy isn’t bad. In this context, crazy just means different; because differences can seem crazy at first glance. So, just assume people will be different from you and learn how to be open-minded to this and to accept the differences. If you can do that, you will get along with so many more people, and your friends’ quirks won’t appear so weird anymore. Try it and let me know if it works.
I know that I’ve analyzed this quote more than most people just listening to a song, but I liked it and thought there was some meaning to be gleaned. I hope you remember this quote this week, so you can make sure you find something to believe in, create an activity to do with your friends each week, and realize that everyone is different and accept them for who they are. Have a great week!
